Not my brand of humor
"This slapstick over-the-top humor isn’t my thing. I got the gist of this a little over half way in and decided to leave and do something else with the rest of my evening. Plenty of people were yucking it up though. "

Could have lived without the overt sexual antics
"Well acted, funny at times, chaotic — interesting twist."

Lots Of Promise, But Ultimately Disappointing
"I preface this by saying that we bought tickets during Titus Burgess’s run as Mary, but he was sick and couldn’t perform. I had high hopes for the show based on everything I read but the reality is that it felt more like an hour plus mid-level SNL sketch. The jokes leaned on the vulgar side, there was lots of yelling, and most of the plot was pretty predictable, including the big twist. I soooooo wanted to like this show but about 20 minutes in I was bored and looking forward to it being over. The last 15 minutes seemed tacked on to make it last past the hour mark. I know it won Tonys and was a runner up for a Pulitzer, but I honestly don’t know why. It had none of the cleverness of an Avenue Q or depth of a Next To Normal. To be fair, most of the audience seemed to really enjoy it, but it just didn’t work for me. Watch some clips and draw your own conclusions."

If you liked Book of Mormon, you'll love this!
"Tituss Burgess was terrific. Humor in the show was nothing new. Same tired , obvious and worn out "naughty" jokes. Well done production of nothing new."

Is it funny?
"The show is farcical in its construction. If the female lead character is played by a male, maybe it’s easier to find the humor? But when the lead is played by a woman, making fun of a mentally ill alcoholic is tough. In real life, Mary Lincoln suffered from chronic depression. Making that the butt of the joke is harsh. But, if you don’t know history, and making fun of handicaps is humorous to you, then I think you will find the show funny. "

Oh. Mary is just Oh, Kay
"Sketch comedy doesn’t quite pay off. Funny premise and some funny lines but structure is weak as is climax. Looks tired already and the actors talked so fast I couldn’t understand s lot of the dialogue - farce is not fast, it’s intense! Oh, well…"

About Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
